Yoga Exercise for Women Newly Diagnosed with Breast Cancer

Yoga is a complementary exercise intervention and has been described as the union of mind, body and spirit. It consists of skills, tools, or techniques such as pranayama (breath work), asana (physical postures, movement), and meditation (concentration, mental clarity and awareness) all working together to function as a system of health and well being.

It is well known that many women diagnosed and treated for breast cancer suffer from stress, anxiety and fatigue before, during and after treatment. Following breast cancer surgery and systemic treatments, women also report concerns about body image. Studies have demonstrated how psychologic factors such as stress can lead to higher cancer incidence and decreased survival. The implementation of a psychologic intervention that involves muscle relaxation and methods for improving mood have been shown to enhance immunity, improve survival and decrease breast cancer recurrence. Also, studies of individuals participating in stress reduction programs such as yoga or other mindfulness based exercises have shown a reduction in stress levels.

At Mayo Clinic, a Yoga study led by Dr. Sandhya Pruthi and her colleagues are examining the potential impact of a yoga intervention on stress level and quality of life in breast cancer patients.
